Just a short update : I have now made more recordings on my HDS1, almost filling up the spinrite-repaired HDD and all the "frozen images" phenomenons seem to be gone now. So I guess it should be ok now, at least for some time. Thanks again for the support. .merle1. Again, good news! I wonder what S...

Hi all, Just wanted to tell that my HDS1 is working again! After five HDD crashes I finally got hold of a good drive. It's been sitting in my unit for three weeks now, probably recorded/played 30 - 40 hours in total. Seems it was just a matter of finding a drive in good condition after all... Good ...

Hi Andy. I'll start by saying that I've no idea whether my HDS1 updated or not. It's been unplugged and out of use for about a year now. Ever since I defected to Sony I haven't looked back. I still toy with the idea of running a soldering iron over the faulty decoder board, though. Having said that,...

Hi Pip, If it's any consolation, my HDS1 was repaired once and replaced once within its warranty period. The third time it failed, it was out of warranty, hence this site. I would have hoped that JVC would have honoured the warranty on the replacement (brand new) unit for a further year, but no. I t...

Hmmm.. tricky one, but I'd say the HD was on the way out. You could try replacing it if you have the inclination to do so. What worries me are the two noises you're hearing. It's possible that something else is causing the HD to fail. If the power supply is flaky then it could be sending unlean powe...

Hi MerleOne, Welcome to the board. Sorry to hear you're having problems. AndyWilks may be able to correct me on this, but hissing sounds normally come from power supplies before they die. Don't know about the humming. There's not a transformer in there that's big enough to create a hum (as far as I ...

Yep, sorry Wayne. That was probably me. I noticed that people were able to post as 'Guest'. I've now stopped that, so in future you've got to log in, I'm afraid.
I got your email, btw, and I'm glad you got there in the end. Sounds like a 'mare!

Ted, You really aren't having much luck, are you? What I can say is that a drive will be recognised by the PC BIOS, regardless of the contents. If this drive isn't being recognised I can only assume it has failed. In short, if the PC doesn't recognise it, then I'd be surprised if the JVC recognises ...

Even my old HDS1 managed that OK! :D Isn't it something to do with using the Clock Auto-set. I seem to recall (without manual or machine here) that you have to use a certain TV channel that broadcasts time sync signals. I could of course be wrong, but I can't see why they would have dropped this fea...

Hi Ted, That's really bad news (or bad luck). I would strongly suggest that you try to get PowerMax working on your PC and test those drives. I've never come across an IDE interface that destroyed drives, and I don't really think your HDS1 is doing that. However, it's a distinct possibility that the...

Hi Mike_Kitchen, Firstly, I'm sorry you had to find this site! In answer to your question, I don't really know why these disks fail so often. My only theory is that as soon as you switch the JVC on, it starts recording live TV, ready for you to press the pause button; i.e. for the 'pause live TV' fe...

Geert Jan, I agree. The most likely explanation is that the drive is faulty. The fact that you got the 'bad blocks' message whilst backing it up certainly points to that. Of course, it could be the digital codec board but a new drive will easily prove that. Ted, as Geert Jan says, go for a low-level...

Ted,

Yes, I echo what AndyWilks says. It takes several hours to backup your existing drive, although it depends hugely upon how full it ever got.

Restoring Geert Jan's 'virgin' image takes around a couple of hours, depending upon PC speed.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Hi guys, Just an observation here: It does seem incredible that by the time JVC made the HM-HDS4 they would surely have had many, many examples of people wanting to 'initialize' or clear their hard drives - especially on the HDS1 and essentially the reason these forums were created in the first plac...
