Geert Jan Laanstra's Image file/s
Hi folks
First post here and I'm mighty glad to have found the site in my search for solutions to the problem with my HM-HDS1 (PAL, UK).
I've had the unit for several years and although it's worked fine up until recently, the inevitable HDD crash fault recently occured. I've been using the machine primarily as a VHS and S-VHS player in digitising (direct to a separate DVD recorder) my huge collection of VHS tapes recorded over 30 years in the course of my work. As the owners of working machines among you will know, the machine provides exceptionally good playback and its B.E.S.T mode (with digital correction processing) is as good as any comparable professional machine I've ever used. That's why I don't want to write it off.
Unfortunately, the non-functioning HDD means that the VCR doesn't work either - all I get is the default JVC screen/s and nothing else when powering up.
I've obtained an identical Maxtor 40GB HDD from a specialist supplier on eBay (for £19.95+P&P!), and I intend to write Geert's image file to it (see this link). However, there are two files - one 2GB file and a 1GB file available for download. I've downloaded both files - EUhc.GHO and EUhc0001.GHS - but which should I use? And what do I need to do to write the file to the HDD (when in a spare drive bay of a WinXP PC)?
Any help and additional tips most gratefully received!
Colin

Many thanks indeed for your speedy reply!
I'm getting somebody who knows more about this stuff to do the format of the disk and then the burning of the image for me, but out of interest how are the two disk image files actually written to the HDD? (Ie: what do I need to do with them - surely it's not a simple drag and drop is it?).
Very basic - sorry!

Colin,
Very interesting to hear your views on the SVHS quality of this deck. Perhaps I won't scrap it after all.
Anyway, if this reply is not too late:
When you image the file(s) back with Ghost.exe, it automatically recognises each one as parts of an individual disk image. Therefore, Ghost.exe will start with the .GHO and move on to the .GHS once finished. It's basically like a split zip or rar archive. Hope that makes sense.
Andy.

Hi all,
long time ago I made a copy on all information found about the HM-HDS1 in case of a crash of the HDD. it's time now, I want to give my Jvc to my uncle who have an huge collection of VHS.
I have a good HDD but I realise that the .ghs file miss me. I know a long time is gone and now we work with bluray but if someone have a copy of this file somewhere in a old hdd.
Thanks
Jessy

Re: Geert Jan Laanstra's Image file/s
Hi everybody!

Re: Geert Jan Laanstra's Image file/s
I've sent you a private message with the link, as I'm currently unable to post messages containing URL links, for some reason. I will work on fixing that and once fixed I will provide the link in a new post.

Hi, yes, I still have an image, although it's for a UK (PAL) machine. Just be aware that it only seems to work with certain types of HDD.
See:

I have the same problem in my machine. Do let me know how you get on.
Andy.

Re: Geert Jan Laanstra's Image file/s
First of all a big thank you to Andy and Laan for their dedication and time spent on this forum.
I was, very happily, able to RESURRECT my recorder!!
But I had a strange snag and I'd like to share my experience in case it can helps someone else.
Given that I also tried to restore the image on a couple of old ATA disks but, although the restoration was successful, the recorder did not start again.
I found on the internet a used disk of the same make and model required by the recorder, practically identical, only some numbers on the label were different (including obviously the serial number) however the main data are exactly identical, but when I tried to restore the image, Ghost gave an error even before starting: Ghost said that the destination disk was smaller!?! I've tried running the Ghost with different Switches and tried different settings without any result.
I analyzed the two disks and it turned out that the one I bought used has 2 less cylinders for a total of 2113 sectors of difference in geometry (CHS), I don't know how it is possible the two hard disks also have the same firmware version.
Before trying stupid and potentially harmful things (like swap the electronic boards of the disks) I thought of some tricks to restore the image, so I thought of using one of the incompatible disks, but on which I had successfully restored the image, as an intermediary; finally I found a program that allowed me to clone a disk into one with a smaller capacity without stopping me at the start: Roadkil's Raw Copy which performed the copy in about 40 minutes without error, although I expected it to report an error at the end of the copy due to the slight difference in the size of the destination disk, finally the disk restarted my recorder!
Since my aim was to be able to reuse the S-VHS part, actually I didn't try to record on HD but I think there would be no problems.
Thanks again for maintained this forum live till today even if this recorders are now obsolete and out of use.

Sorry but I do not understand if is referred to my previous post. Anyway I'm not sure I understand what you mean exactly.DanielAnync wrote: ↑Tue Feb 13, 2024 3:46 pm Has Geert Jan Laanstra's imagistic approach to problem-solving revolutionized the field, or is it just a passing trend? Unconventional uses of JVC HM-HDS4 HDD/SVHS Recorder.
Has anyone experimented with the JVC HM-HDS4 HDD/SVHS Recorder for unconventional purposes, such as creating unique art installations or incorporating it into interactive performances? I'm curious to explore the creative potential of this technology beyond its traditional usage.

Controversial JVC HM-HDS1 HDD/SVHS Recorder.
Does the controversial JVC HM-HDS1 HDD/SVHS Recorder truly live up to its reputation, or is it merely a victim of misconceptions and misunderstandings? Are there any hidden features or drawbacks that users should be aware of before purchasing this device?
